Strauss is junior champion

Darren Strauss became the 2012 Windhoek Open Junior table tennis champion when he beat Jakob Machleidt in a close five-setter in Windhoek recently.

The Namibia Table Tennis Association (NTTA) hosted the junior division of the annual Windhoek Open Junior Championships at the Deutsche Höhere Privat Schule.

The early rounds of boys and girls singles matches of the knock-out format tournament started at 9:30 in the morning and was concluded with the prize giving at 13:00 that afternoon.

The Namibia Table Tennis Association (NTTA) recently hosted the senior division of the annual Windhoek Open Championships at the Police College Table Tennis Club.

The early rounds of singles matches of the knock-out format tournament started at 9:30 in the morning and was concluded with the prize giving at 17:00 that evening.

The doubles competition was contested initially as a round robin format in two groups, with the four top performers battling it out in the finals.

Westside High win Table Tennis tourney

Coastal Schools Champs

Westside High School won the FNB Coastal Schools Table Tennis Tournament which was recently held for the first time in its history at the Narraville Primary School in Walvis Bay.

Three teams from the coast were joined by an Invitation Team consisting of team coaches and Namibia’s Top five ranked players.

Two teams from Namib High School and one team from Westside High fought it out for the FNB-sponsored trophy.

Wang dominates Swakopmund Open

Colin Wang dominated the Men’s Senior category at the Salz Gossow Swakop Open Championships on August 25, winning both the singles and the doubles titles.

In the singles competition, Wang finished top of his group in the round robin section, before beating Bastian Huster 3-0 in the quarterfinals and Namibia’s current top ranked player Heiko Fliedl 3-1 in the semifinal.

In the final, Wang took on veteran player Rudi Saunderson, who recently returned to table tennis after a long absence. Saunderson however was no match for Wang who won the match in straight sets, 3-0.

Fleidl is Senior Open table tennis champ

Heiko Fliedl won the Namibian Senior Open Table Tennis title for the first time in his career when he beat Reinhardt Stanley 4-2 in the final on Saturday.

The Namibia Table Tennis Association (NTTA) hosted the annual Namibian National Senior Open Championships on Saturday, 14 July 2012 at the SKW Sports Club in Windhoek.

The tournament was administrated by the NTTA and was another huge success. It was also the first tournament that made use of tables and other equipment recently received as part of a donation from the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

Machleidt, Van Wyk win junior table tennis titles

Jakob Machleidt of the German Private School DHPS and Antoinnette van Wyk of M&K Gertze were the singles winners of the Namibian Under 18 Table Tennis Championships which were held at the JTL Beukes Primary School in Rehoboth on Saturday.

The tournament was administrated by the NTTA and was a huge success, thoroughly enjoyed by all involved.

The tournament, which was well attended by 58 boys and 14 girls, saw players from Windhoek, Rehoboth, Mariental and as far as Stampriet in action. Players from the coastal towns unfortunately did not attend.

Namibia struggle at World Table Tennis Champs

Namibia have been struggling at the World Team Table Tennis Championships, in Dortmund, Germany and have lost all their matches so far.

Competing at the event for the first time on six years, Namibia were drawn in Group Q where they lost all six their group matches 3-0.

They lost against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Turkmenistan, Tanzania and Guernsey to finish bottom of the group with 5 points.

The group was won by Sri Lanka with 10 points, followed by Guernsey (9), Turkmenistan (8), Tanzania and Zimbabwe on 6 points each and Namibia on 5 points.

DHPS win Central Schools Table Tennis Championships

DHPS A from Windhoek and M&K Gertze from Rehoboth were the winners of Group A and B of the FNB Central Schools Table Tennis Championships that took place in Rehoboth last weekend.

This year’s tournament was divided into two groups, Group A and Group B. Together, the two groups consisted of 15 teams with three players each from 10 schools, with one team from Mariental, 10 teams from Rehoboth, 3 from Windhoek and 1 from Swakopmund competing.

Namibia’s national men’s table tennis team leaves for Germany next week to participate in the 2012 World Team Table Tennis Championships in Dortmund.

It will be the first time since 2006 that Namibia participates at the World Championships, while their last international participation came in 2009 when they came fourth in the Zone 6 Table Tennis Championships.

The Namibian team paid a courtesy call to the Namibia Sport Commission on Thursday morning, where the players were introduced to the media.

Heiko Fliedl won the senior title of the Namibian Table Tennis Association season opening championships in Windhoek recently after beating Reinhardt Stanley in the final.

The final saw a closely contested match with Fliedl eventually beating Stanley over five sets.

The Senior Division was contested in the singles category only, with men and women making up a mixed field of participants.

The round robin format was applied for the initial round, with quarter-, semi- and a final match for the top finishers of the round robin format.
