NBF revises constitution

Karas Basketball Association Committee

The Namibia Basketball Federation (NBF) committee has revised its constitution and has also established 12 regional basketball associations.

This is in line with what they were mandated to do by the Namibian Sports Commission in September 2009 when an interim committee was established to run and manage the affairs of basketball in the country. The committee was mandated to revise the NBF constitution, restructure the regional structures and to facilitate the national basketball congress to elect a new leadership.

The Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF) conducted a clinic in Walvis Bay together with the Erongo Basketball Association (EBA) on June 12.

The clinic was a success with more than 100 children from Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Windhoek taking part.

About 15 coaches from Physically Active Youth (PAY) and from various clubs in Walvis Bay assisted in teaching the children how to dribble, pass and shoot the ball.

There was also a friendly match between the Windhoek based children and the coastal based children. The children from the coast won the match.

Three new basketball committees

The Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF) continued in its efforts to restructure basketball administration in Namibia by electing three new regional committees in the Omaheke, Ohangwena and Kunene regions over the weekend.

NBF President Ndeulipula Hamutumwa facilitated the Ohangwena and Kunene election while NBF Secretary General Carlos Manuel facilitated in Omaheke.

The Kunene Basketball Association consists of L. Shikulo (President), K. Nangolo (Vice President), J. Tjiho (Secretary General), M. Kasale (Treasurer), M. Tjiho (Development Officer)

Two new basketball regional committees

Caprivi committee

The Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF) is continuing its efforts to restructure basketball administration in Namibia and on Saturday, 15 May established two new regional committees in the Caprivi and Omusati regions respectively.

The Caprivi election was facilitated by NBF Secretary General Carlos Manuel and Frank Albin of the German Olympic Sports Confederation. The event was also blessed by NSSU Deputy National School Sports Coordinator Rudolph Mupiri. The two elections were made possible by the support of the Namibia Sports Commission.

Rusten Mogane and Ndeulipulwa Hamutumwa

The Namibian Basketball Federation (NBF) and the Namibia School Sports Union (NSSU) conducted a very successful basketball clinic at the Windhoek Technical High School from Thursday, 29 April to Saturday, May 1.

More than 25 participants from 12 regions took part at this historic event. The representatives will now implement the mini-basketball program for children in their regions with support from the NBF and the NSSU.

Germany strengthens basketball ties

The president of the Baden Wurtemburg Basketball Association Joachim Spagele arrived in Namibia over the weekend for an official visit with the aim of strengthening ties and assisting in the development of basketball in Namibia.

Spagele was officially welcomed by Namibia Olympic Committee member Ndeulipulwa Hamutumwa at a press conference at the Namibia Sport Commission on Monday.

Following the successful hosting of the Basketball Indaba in October 2009, the Namibia Basketball Federation is continuing in its efforts to resuscitate basketball as a national sport.

Among the efforts required to clean up basketball, the Indaba resolved that new leadership structures be elected in all thirteen regions. This resolution was also in line with the mandate given by the Namibia Sports commission to the NBF’s interim committee, to elect a “new leadership in the entire 13 regions.”

Unam win TISAN basketball titles

The University of Namibia (Unam) emerged victorious at the TISAN Games, winning both the men and women’s basketball titles on Monday. In the men’s final Unam comfortably beat the Institute of University Management (IUM) 102-75, while Unam won the gold medal in the women’s category, beating Polytech of Namibia 68-43.

In the men’s final, Unam streaked into an early 13-2 lead after some strong attacks by Allan Nghixulifwa and Gerard Thimende. Spurred on by veteran Corbin Prizonsky, IUM fought back and at the end of the first quarter were trailing 24-18.
