WOB take early lead in Field Hockey

Windhoek Old Boys has taken an early lead in both the men and women’s Premier Leagues, following the first two rounds of the Namibian Field Hockey season.

In the Men’s Premier League, WOB thrashed DTS 7-1 on June 2, with veteran Luke Pennefather scoring five goals and Siabonga Martins and Luke Whittaker one goal each.

A week later DTS however managed to hold the defending champions Unam to a 3-3 draw to get their first point of the season. Young Wayne Jeffrey scored two goals and Luke Bolton 1, while Kave Tjikuniva, Dickson Vambe and Joel Kayuhwa scored for Unam.

Unam, DTS dominate hockey leagues

Unam and DTS were comfortable winners of the Telecom Indoor Hockey Men and Women’s Premier League titles after the league came to an end on Saturday.

Unam won the men’s title with 24 points, finishing well clear of second placed Windhoek Old Boys (19 points) and third placed DTS (17 points).

Unam brushed aside all opposition and already won the title with three matches to go. With the title already assured, they suffered their first defeat of the season going down 7-6 to Wanderers last Thursday, while DTS held them to a 3-3 draw the next day.

Unam, DTS close in on hockey titles

Unam and DTS look set to win the Men and Women’s Telecom Premier League Indoor Hockey titles respectively when the league comes to a close this weekend.

Although a number of matches still have to be completed due to a congested fixture list, both teams are still unbeaten and are the favourites to win the respective titles.

In the Men’s Premier League Unam retained their unbeaten status with a 7-5 victory against Wanderers on Saturday, after leading 3-2 at halftime.

Unam beat WOB in thriller

Unam beat Windhoek Old Boys 3-2 over the weekend to extend their lead at the top of the Telecom Namibia Indoor Hockey Men’s Premier League.

In an exciting match on non-stop action, Unam took the lead through Heini Swartbooi after 8m.

WOB pushed hard for the equaliser with former Unam star Siabonga Martins leading the assault, but Unam would not budge and a defining moment of the game came on 14m.

WOB beat DTS to go second

Windhoek Old Boys beat DTS 5-3 to move up to second position in the Telecom Namibia Indoor Hockey Men’s Premier League competition over the weekend.

WOB’s national striker Siabonga Martins had a great match, scoring four of their goals, while Joel Vorster scored their fifth goal.

DTS’ scorers were Wian Shickerling who scored a brace and Luke Bolton with one goal.

The bonus point victory now puts WOB in second position on the log with 8 points from three matches. They previously beat the X Team but lost to log leaders Unam.

Women's hockey team shines at SA IPT

Namibia’s senior women and men’s hockey teams finished fourth and fifth respectively at the South African Interprovincial Hockey Tournament that took place in Cape Town from March 1 to 3.

The women’s team was unlucky not to finish second after they had a goal disallowed in their final match that saw them losing the match and slipping down to fourth position on the overall standings.

The women’s team won three out of their five matches, to finish fourth overall out of six teams.

X Team shocks Windhoek teams

The X Team from Walvis Bay had a great weekend in the Telecom Namibia Indoor Hockey Men’s Premier League after beating Wanderers and drawing to DTS in Windhoek.

On Saturday afternoon they staged a fine comeback to beat Wanderers 4-3 after trailing 2-1 at halftime.

Wanderers attacked from the start and seemed to be in control when they took a 2-0 lead midway through the first half through goals by Stefan du Preez and Francois Fuscher.

Unam’s men’s Premier League side increased their lead at the top of the Telecom Namibia Indoor Hockey League when they comfortably beat the X Team 8-2 in Walvis Bay on Saturday.

The X Team did well to hold them to a slender 2-1 lead at the break, but Unam finished stronger to score six more second half goals to win the match with a bonus point.

Unam captain Joseph Kashamako was in great form, scoring four goals, while Erastus Kashungu and Kave Tjikuniva each scored two and Erwin Handura one goal.

Collin Peake and Stephen Peake replied for the X Team.

Unam off to winning start

Defending men’s champions Unam got off to a great start in the Telecom Namibia Indoor Hockey League over the weekend as they won both their matches with maximum bonus points to go to the top of the log.

On Friday, Unam beat Windhoek Old Boys 5-4 in a close encounter and followed that up with a 6-3 victory against DTS on Saturday.

Their match against WOB was of particular interest since it saw former Unam star Siabonga Martins turning out for WOB against his old club.

Telecom sponsors N$75 000 for Namibian hockey

Telecom Namibia on Wednesday announced a sponsorship of N$75 000 to the Namibia Hockey Union for the Telecom Namibia Indoor Hockey League that will start on Friday, February 10.

The NHU’s president Jesse Schickerling made the announcement at a press conference that was also attended by Telecom Namibia MD Frans Ndoroma.
