AFCON 2008 â?? Group A Preview

Namibia go into only their second African Cup of Nations finals in Ghana this month as distinct underdogs, not unlike their first appearance at the continental showpiece in 1998.

On that occasion, Namibia produced some stirring comebacks, most notably against the Ivory Coast in their first match. At halftime Namibia were trailing 3-0, but a great comeback saw them drawing level at 3-all before the Ivory Coast snatched the winning goal in the final five minutes.

Ghana, here we come!

Namibiaâ??s Brave Warriors leave for Ghana in January to participate in the African Cup of Nations finals.

It is a tremendous achievement to join Africaâ??s footballing elite at the continental showpiece, but it will not be easy. Namibia has been drawn in one of the toughest groups along with hosts Ghana, Guinea and Morocco and no one is giving them much chance of progressing past the group stages.

Addressing a media conference following his arrival at the Standard Bank headquarters in the capital, Pele said the underrated countries like Namibia and Benin could cause major upsets at the continental showpiece, which kicks off on January 20 next year.

Although Namibia ended up on the losing side on each occasion, the Brave Warriors built up some much needed experience as all the matches were played away from home.
