Ekandjo calls on NSC to prioritise codes

MTC’s chief of human capital and corporate affairs, Tim Ekandjo said the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) should identify codes that bring the greatest international benefit and give them more financial support. Ekandjo said that would be more effective than sponsoring a lot of codes which achieve little success.

Ekandjo was speaking at the MTC/NSC Annual Sports Awards on Friday evening.

MTC NSC Sport Awards launched

MTC will sponsor the 2011 MTC NSC Sport Awards with an amount of N$350 000. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 4 at the Safari Hotel.

MTC sponsorships manager, Isaac Hamata said this would be the ninth year that they would be sponsoring the event.

“It is the ninth year in succession that we are sponsoring this event which celebrates the achievements of our sports men and women, including persons with disabilities,” Hamata said.

Sports Conference postponed

The Ministry of Youth, Sports, National Service and Culture and the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) have decided to postpone the Sports Conference that had originally been slated for 22 to 25 August in Windhoek.

The vice chairperson of the NSC, Ben Naobeb said there were reasons that led them to postpone the conference.

“We realised that the national federations were engaged in the All Africa Games (AAG) preparations and therefore we have not been getting the required response from them,” Naobeb said.

Mogane suspended from NSC

Rusten Mogane, the chief administrator of the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) was suspended last week due to a lack of proper financial controls relating to his pension contributions.

Ben Naobeb, the vice chairperson of the NSC announced the suspension at a press conference on Tuesday.

“We found some discrepancies on his pension contribution that we would like to investigate,” Naobeb said.

“Having looked at the figures, we thought it wise to suspend him for three months with full benefits,” he added.

The suspension runs from the 1st of July to September 30.

Gawanas to attend Monaco conference

Namibian Sport Medic Donatha Gawanas will attend the IOC World Conference on the Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sports in Monaco from April 7 to 9, after receiving sponsorships from the National Olympic Committe and Nampower to cover her costs.

Nampower sponsored Gawanas’ air ticket while the NNOC sponsored her accommodation and registration for the course.

According to the secretary general of the NNOC Abner Xoagub, it was important for Gawanas to attend the course so that she could gain more experience and share it with the Namibian nation.

Sport administrators taken to task

The Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer of MTC, Tim Ekandjo has called on sport administrators who hamper the development of sport to shape up or ship out, following a few embarrassing public spats of late.
Speaking at the MTC Namibia Sport Awards on Friday evening, Ekandjo said that poor leadership in sport was hampering the development of sport in Namibia.

Ambunda, Ahrens win top sport awards

Paulus Ambunda and Gaby Ahrens were named as Namibia’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year at a glittering function at the Safari Court in Windhoek on Friday night.

Ambunda capped a great year by winning the WBO African bantamweight title and being ranked fourth in the world by the World Boxing Organisation. He remained unbeaten in four fights to take his professional record to 13 wins from 13 fights.

He said he was very proud of winning the title, adding that it would inspire him to win the world title.

Sport stars to be honoured

Friday evening will see the crowning of Namibia’s new Sportsman and Woman of the Year at the 2010 MTC NSC Sport Awards.

In the Sportsman of the Year category, there are five finalists and one of the favourites to win is boxer Paulus “The Rock” Ambunda who is the current WBO Africa bantamweight titleholder and is ranked fourth in the world by the World Boxing Organisation. He is ranked 27th in the world by the influential boxrec.com website.

MTC invests N$17 million in sport

MTC on Tuesday announced a total sponsorship of more than N$17 million for sport in Namibia for the 2010/11 season.

Addressing a media conference, MTC’s Head of Human Capital & Corporate Affairs, Tim Ekandjo gave an overview of MTC’s investment in sport in Namibia over the past five years.

He said that sport sponsorship was a risky undertaking because returns on investment were hard to measure.

The finalists for the 2010 Namibia Sport Awards ceremony were announced at the Namibia Sport Commission’s offices in Windhoek on Wednesday.

Namibia Sport Commissioner Piet du Plooy said the Namibia Sport Awards had become a prestigious event on the sporting calendar which had been graced by top sportsmen and women in the past, like the former British multiple karate world champion Geoff Thompson.
