N$90 000 for Volleyball for All

The 29th DTS Volleyball for All tournaments will take place at the DTS club in Olympia on February 4.

Werner Gouws, the chairman of DTS club, said that the tournament had grown a lot since it first started.

“The Volleyball for All event has grown over the years from a mere 120 teams to 216 teams entered for 2012,” Gouws said.

“Next year DTS will be celebrating the 30th edition of the Volleyball for All and we look forward to sharing this occasion with our long time loyal partners Namibia Breweries,” he added.

De Agosto, Mafolofolo are Zone 6 volleyball champions

Desportivo de Agosto of Angola and Mafolofolo of Botswana were crowned the Zone 6 Volleyball Club champions at the DTS Sport Club in Windhoek on Thursday evening.

De Agosto beat Kutlwano of Botswana in a thrilling five setter, while Mafolofolo also beat Kutlwano 3-1 in the women’s final.

The men’s final was a thrilling affair that could have gone either way. Spectators at the packed DTS Club were treated to some top class volleyball as the match continued till late in the evening, with fortunes swaying to and fro.

The teams for the finals of the Zone VI Volleyball Club Championships were determined on Wednesday afternoon and evening with four semi-finals of spectacular volleyball.

In the women’s competition, Mafolofolo and Kutlwano, both of Botswana secured their spot in the finals by beating Kalawango of Botswana and Khomas Nampol Volleyball Club (KNVC) of Namibia respectively.

Kalawango and KNVC will play for the bronze medal, while Mafolofolo and Kutlwano will battle it out for the women’s title at 17h00 on Thursday.

Kutlwano of Botswana and Deportivo de Agosto of Angola moved to the top of the Men’s A and B groups following the third day’s play at the Zone 6 African Volleyball Club Championships on Monday.

Kutlwano beat the University of Western Cape of South Africa in an exciting match in by three sets to love. Although Kutlwano did not concede a set they were pushed all the way by UWC before winning the match 26-24, 25-19, 25-19.

The victory saw them remaining at the top of Group A on 12 points from four matches, with UWC lying second on 9 points.

Namibian teams are having a hard time at the Zone VI Volleyball Club Championships, which are being hosted at DTS and Patrick Iyambo Police College in Windhoek.

After the first two days of action the men’s teams were without a win while the women’s teams won three matches out of eight.

On the second day of action, the Namibia Defence Force's (NDF) women’s side won two matches against Jewel Stars of Zimbabwe (3-0) and Government Printers of Zambia (3-1). Revivals also beat Panthers from Zimbabwe 3-1.

The Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) will be hosting the Zone VI Club Championships from 26 November to 1 December in Windhoek.

A total of 25 (13 men and 12 women) teams will participate in the tournament that will bring the best indoor volleyball clubs in southern Africa to Namibia.

The Namibian mens’ teams that qualified in last year’s club championships are KNVC, NDF and SKW. The Namibian women’s teams are KNVC, Revivals and NDF.

NVF president, Heiko Diehl said he was excited about hosting the championships.

NDF and KNVC were the winners of the Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) Cup men and women’s competitions respectively.

In the men’s competition, NDF beat the reigning league champions, Unam, to win the Cup for the second year in a row.

The match started off with both teams on equal footing with the Unam team managing to continue fighting after losing a player due to injury.

However, NDF proved to be unstoppable and completely dominated the rest of the match to win 3-0.

NDF continues to lead the men’s competition of the Namibia Volleyball Federation (NVF) Cup after they won their Saturday match against DTS 3-1.

This was the defending champions’ third win in the tournament after they beat SKW and KNVC in the first weekend of matches. DTS are second after they beat KNVC 3-0 on Friday. They however lost their two matches on Saturday against NDF (3-1) and SKW (3-1).

The Namibian Defense Force (NDF) Men’s team took an early lead after the first weekend of matches in the NVF Cup.

NDF, the defending champions beat SKW on Saturday, after they already took points against Khomas Nampol Volleyball Club(KNVC).

Although KNVC won the match by 3 sets to 2, the NDF team was declared winner as Nampol had made use of an unregistered player.

Last Saturday the final games of the 2011 Namibian Indoor Volleyball league were played and the top women and men’s teams secured their qualification for the prestigious NVF Cup that will start on Friday evening, September 30.

For the UNAM men’s team the league ended with only two lost games throughout the year and thus they forced the heavy favorites and last year’s NVF Cup winners, the Namibian Defence Force, into second place on the log.
