WOB win women's Premier League

Juanne Louw

Windhoek Old Boys won the Field Hockey Women’s Premier League for the second year in a row when they beat their closest rivals Wanderers 2-0 on Saturday. The victory maintained WOB’s unbeaten run in the league and although the league is not over yet, they have opened up an eight-point lead at the top of the log and cannot be caught anymore.

Wanderers had to win their match to stand any chance of winning the title, and in the opening exchanges made some good attacks. Juanne Louw had a fine game in midfield, while striker Mandy Lessing was a handful for WOB’s defence.

The youthful WOB side however managed to withstand Wanderers’ attacks and grew stronger as the game progressed. With Marcia Venter, Annalien Davin and the veteran Shayne Cormack initiating their attacks from midfield, WOB started to assert themselves and they took the lead through a goal by Melissa Giles shortly before halftime.

In the second half of few chances, Daniella Labuschagne added a second goal to ensure WOB’s victory.
WOB now lead the log with 15 points from four matches, having scored 16 goals and conceding none in the process.

Wanderers drop down to third position, having been overtaken by Unam, who beat DTS 1-0 in Saturday’s other women’s Premier League match.

In an even match, Unam’s industrious midfielder Judith Anton scored the winning goal from a short corner midway through the second half.

DTS had their fair share of chances with Desiree Klemp proving to be a handful in attack, while Jacome Schickerling and Michelle Barnard stood out in midfield. But Unam defended well, none more so than goalie Upangura Katwamba who brought off some fine saves.

The result sees Unam moving up to second position on seven points, followed by Wanderers on six, while DTS have only collected one point from four matches.
