Windhoek Old Boys thumped Polytechnic 10-0 while Wanderers beat DTS 1-0 in Men’s Premier League hockey matches on Saturday. WOB were far too strong for Polytechnic who are finding the going tough in their first season in the Premier League. Their cause was also not helped by the late arrival of two of their players which saw them having to play most of the first half with two men down.
WOB, fielding a young side including several schoolboys like Penda Namundjebo, Dirk Basson, Heino Walters and Lesley Campbell took a while to get into their stride, before Walters opened their account after a fine run by Namundjebo.
From then on, goals came at regular intervals as players like Namundjebo, Riaan Louw and Luke Whittaker repeatedly cut through Polytechnic’s defence.
Luke Whittaker made it 2-0, shooting in a rebound from a short corner, while Riaan Louw added two goals in quick succession from short corners.
By now, WOB were dominating the game and their goal tally continued to rise.
Veteran Trevor Cormack made it 5-0, shooting in a rebound from Whittaker’s shot, while Walters scored his second when he stabbed in a loose ball in the box. Just before halftime Cormack scored his second when he followed up a loose ball in the box.
Polytechnic gave a better account of themselves after the break as players like Asser Munanyo and Victor Nghilengwa put in some good attacks.
WOB’s defence, marshalled well by veteran Coenie Fourie however stood firm and they soon increased their lead to 8-0 when Riaan Louw completed his hattrick with a fine shot from the edge of the box.
Dirk Basson made it 9-0 with another field goal before Namundjebo made the final score 10-0 with a great solo goal, beating two defenders with a tricky run, before unleashing a great shot into the net.
In Saturday’s other Men’s Premier League match Wanderers beat DTS 1-0 through a late goal by Riaan Kruger.
The weekend’s results sees Unam remaining on top of the log with 13 points, followed by Wanderers on 12 and DTS on nine points. WOB are fourth on seven points, while Polytechnic are bottom of the log on zero points.
