Not even a broken nose could stop rhythmic gymnast Anica Profitt of the Walvis Bay Gymnastics Club from giving an excellent performance to finish second overall at the second National Rhythmic Gymnastics Qualifying competition at the SKW club on Saturday.
During the warm up session on the second day of the competition, Anica fell and cracked her nose. The severe bleeding was stopped and she was treated immediately afterwards with ice packs and an ice spray. Barely 10 minutes later she successfully completed her first competition routine for the day in the Junior Olympic section.
This was followed with the second routine for the day in which she scored the highest mark (20.725) of the competition for her clubs routine. The perseverance and courage of this 14-year old gymnast brought tears to the eyes of many spectators and fellow gymnasts and she ended up with the overall silver medal. Michelle Birbach of SKW won the gold medal in the Junior Olympic category, while Aldi Truter of SKW won the bronze medal.
The remainder of the competition went very well although the gymnasts struggled in the cold temperatures of Windhoek. Cosy blankets and heaters assist them as much as possible and ensured spectacular routines, which kept the spectators entertained.
The youngest gymnast in the competition was little Lea Strauss (born 2004) who, together with five other 6 & under gymnasts, brought smiles to many spectators as they performed their well-memorised Level 1 routines for the judges.
The results are attached.
