National wrestling trials were held over the weekend in preparation for the South African Greco Roman Championships that will be held in Ertmelo at the beginning of May. About 60 wrestlers from clubs in Windhoek, Okahandja and Otjiwarongo participated at the trials which took place at the After School Centre Club in Katutura.
Some exciting contests took place while some upsets were also produced. U17 wrestler Jason Afrikaner of ASC beat Namibia’s silver medallist at last year’s Commonwealth Youth Games, Sem Shilimela on points, while Johnny Lofty Eaton of Alte Feste Wrestling Club beat Namibia’s 2008 wrestler of the year Paavo Hihangwa of ASC.
The squad for the SA Greco Roman Championships will be announced at a later stage.
