Byron Briedenhann of the Namibia Swimming Academy was the star swimmer at Gala 6 of the 2005/06 swimming season as he established three new age group records on December 2.
Competing in the Boys 13/14 year age group category, the 14-year-old Briedenhann set new records in the 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly and 400m individual medley events.
Briedenhann set a new mark of 32,61 seconds in the 50m backstroke event, breaking Martin Helm?s longstanding record of 32,86 seconds.
In the 50m butterfly event he broke his own record of 29,73 seconds with a new time of 29,01 seconds, and in the 400m individual medley he once again broke his own record of 5:15,61 with a new time of 5:13,59.
Briedenhann also came close to breaking Mark Horne?s 50m breaststroke record of 34,31 seconds, when he won this event in a time of 35,24 seconds. Abraham Louw of Dolphins Swimming Club was also not far off Horne?s record, coming second in 35,65 seconds.
Louw came close to breaking Quinton Delie?s 50m freestyle record of 27,14, winning the event in a time of 27,47.
Abraham?s younger brother, 10-year-old Hardus Louw won the Boys 9-10 year old 50m backstroke event in 39,66 seconds, not far off Leon van den Heever?s longstanding record of 37,90 seconds.
18-year-old Alex Ray of Marlins Swimming Club won the Boys 17-18 year old 50m freestyle event in 25,96 seconds, coming close to Frank Dahl?s longstanding record of 25,13 seconds, while Byron Briedenhann?s older sister, 15-year-old Jonay of the Namibia Swimming Academy won the Girls 15-16 year old 50m freestyle event in 29,00 seconds, which was not too far off Monica Dahl?s record of 27,39 seconds.
Other fine performances included that of Thomasau Forbes of Swakopmund, winning the Boys 17-18 year old 50m breaststroke event in 33,28 seconds, a second off Jorg Lindemeier?s record of 32,39 seconds. Another Lindemeier, 13-year-old Daniela of Spartans Swimming Club won the Girls 13-14 year old 50m breaststroke event in 38,46 seconds, just about a second off Gwen Currie?s record of 37,47 seconds.
