Mohammed Ouseb made a triumphant debut for Orlando Pirates when he headed in their winning goal against Mighty Gunners on Saturday afternoon.
The match seemed to be heading for a draw when Pirates won a corner with 10 minutes to go and Ouseb rose high to head the ball into the net.
It was a just reward as Pirates dominated possession and could have won by a larger margin.
There were few chances in the first half with Klaas Blom heading in a cross from John Samson only to be ruled offside, while Ouseb went wide with a 30m shot.
In the second half Pirates started attacking more but they could not break through.
Pirates’ industrious midfielder Johannes Seibeb came close early on, having a shot cleared off the line while a long-range effort was tipped for a corner.
John Samson shot straight at Gunners’ keeper from close range and then hit the crossbar with a header midway through the second half.
Gunners’ keeper Hans Uirab pulled off a great save from a shot by Seibeb while the impressive Seibeb found the net on 81m, volleying in a Mekondjo Tobias cross, only to be ruled offside.
John Samson had a header tipped for a corner before Pirates’ pressure finally paid off when Ouseb headed home from a corner.
Kamesiepo wasted a chance when he chipped wide of an open goal in the dying minutes, as Pirates hung on for their victory, which sees them going second on the log, one point behind leaders SKW.
Louis brace as BA beat Tigers
In the late match Jerome Louis scored a brace as Black Africa thrashed Tigers 6-2.
Lolo Goraseb opened the scoring from an early penalty and further goals by Bryan Bantam, Lindon Aseb, Mervyn and Louis them run out comfortable victors.
It was a remarkable victory for BA, since they had to play the whole second half with only ten men. Their goalie Bongile Grootboom was sent off for a foul at the end of the first half and Tigers' sharp shooter Tangeni Shipahu scored from the penalty spot to make the halftime score 3-1 to BA.
Despite being a man down, BA created more chances, with Lolo Goraseb having a great match in midfield and they ran out comfortable victors.
Arrows thrash Chief Santos
In Tsumeb, Eleven Arrows thrashed Chief Santos 6-1.
Henry Somseb and Muna Katupose each scored two goals while Tara Katupose and Sebastian Matende added one each to give them an important away victory.
