Namibia remain second at Youth Games

Namibia remained second on the medal standings at the SADC Zone 6 Games on December 10, with a total of 53 medals by December 10. This consisted of 14 gold, 18 silver and 21 bronze medals. South Africa were still way out in the lead with a total of 85 medals (45 gold, 29 silver and 11 bronze). Zimbabwe was lying third on 2 medals (5 gold, 6 silver and 11 bronze medals). Botswana was lying fourth, Lesotho fifth and Zambia sixth out of 10 countries competing at the Youth Games.

In athletics, Namibia’s Martha Shivolo won a gold medal in the women’s 1500m winning in a time of 4:33,29. Compatriot Lavinia haitope finished fifth in 4:43,63.
Steffi van Wyl won a bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles, finishing third in 15,18 seconds, while compatriot Nandi Jordaan came fifth in 15,81.
Charlize van der Linde won a silver medal in the women’s discus with a distance of 40,85m, while Alberto Mouton won a bronze medal in the men’s triple jump with a distance of 13,85m.
Michelle Pretorius won a bronze medal in the women’s high jump with a height of 1,70m, while compatriots Chantelle Janse van Rensburg and Augusta Sethie finished joint ffth on 1,60m.
In the women’s 4x100m relay, Namibia won a bronze medal after coming third in 48,35 seconds.

In swimming, Byron Briedenhann won a silver medal in the men’s 200m backstroke, finishing second in 2:17,69.
Daniela Lindemeier won a silver medal in the women’s 200m breaststroke final in a time of 2:41,70, while Jonay Briedenhann won two bronze medals.
She came third in the women’s 50m backstroke in a time of 32,75 seconds and third in the women’s 50m butterfly in a time of 29,99 seconds.
Namibia also won a silver medal in the women’s 4x50m freestyle final in a time of 1:56,97.
Quinton Delie finished fifth in the men’s 50m freestyle final in a time of 25,94, while Corinna Wahl finished fourth in the women’s 50m butterfly final in a time of 30,30 seconds.

Namibia’s men’s basketball team lost 74-54 to Botswana, while Namibia’s women’s basketball team lost 81-40 to Zambia.
In netball, Namibia beat Botswana 55-44.
