MTC managing director Bengt Strenge has recommitted MTC?s support of sport in Namibia, while also calling on sport administrators not to be involved in sport for personal gain.
Strenge?s speech was read by MTC?s Senior Manager: Corporate Services, Albertus Auchamub at the Namibia Sport Awards function on October 28.
?Our contribution tonight also supports the core tenets of our corporate social responsibility programme geared towards making a significant long-term impact on the lives of all our people. As a state-owned enterprise and a successful Namibian business, we are duty-bound to make a dent in the developmental initiatives of our shareholder, i.e. the Namibian people through their national government. To that end, MTC devotes one percent of its total revenue or in excess of N$10 million to its corporate social investment drives annually. Sport development, as you might be aware of, is the single largest beneficiary of that goodwill,? he said.
Strenge, however, also warned sport administrators not to be involved in sport for selfish reasons or for personal gain:
?A careful reading of our sporting pages makes for a worrisome trend that needs to be dealt with head-on sooner, rather than later. It is a trend characterised by the twin evils of greed and pursuits of selfish interests. When the primary focus of our sporting heroes and administrators becomes the craving to amass as much money and resources as one can at the expense of plying one?s trade selflessly and in the interest of promoting the greatest good of all, then we have a problem.?
?Colleagues and friends, this is no mean attack on any stakeholder in Namibian sport, but a mere caution to us all as we celebrate achievements of the past year and plan for improvements in the future. We submit that we can ill-afford to see our sporting codes torn asunder by greed and selfish interests to the detriment of us all. At MTC we will jealously guard all the gains made thus far by both the Namibian government and the Namibia Sport Commission to redress some of the challenges that impede sport development and administration in the country. The appointment of the chief administrator is one such positive step we applaud and, Rusten Mogane, you can count on MTC as your corporate partner to help you move mountains if we have to,? he added.
MTC commits itself to sport development
