Schans resigns as Brave Warriors coach

Arie Schans announced his resignation as Brave Warriors coach on Wednesday afternoon.

Schans informed Namibia Sport telephonically that he had decided to resign after being summoned to a meeting by the Namibia Football Association president John Muinjo.

â??John Muinjo phoned me and said he was not happy with the teamâ??s performances. He asked me to attend a meeting on Saturday to discuss the way forward. I told him then that I would resign so that we wont waste each otherâ??s time,â? he said.

Schansâ?? shock resignation follows Namibiaâ??s defeat to Guinea on Sunday which virtually ended their hopes of qualifying for the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola and World Cup final in South Africa.

After announcing his resignation Schans rushed off to the airport to catch a flight back to his native Holland.

Schans said he did not see his reign as Brave Warriors coach as a failure and wished the team well in the future.

â??I enjoyed it very much to coach this team. The players were enthusiastic and willing to learn and work hard. I just think the expectations were a bit too high,â? he said.

â??After we beat Kenya the expectations were very high, but I just felt that it was a bit unrealistic. Our best player Collin Benjamin was out injured for all of the qualifying matches, while we just couldnâ??t match Guinea in terms of quality,â? he said.

Schans takes over from Bamfuchile

Schans took over as Brave Warriors coach at the beginning of the year, after the untimely death of former coach Ben Bamfuchile.
After only one preparation match against Egypt, Schans took the Brave Warriors to the African Cup of Nations in Ghana in January.
There, they were thrashed 5-1 by Morocco in their opening match, but they showed great character to bounce back, losing 1-0 to Ghana before holding Guinea to a 1-all draw.

Since then, however, their performances waned and they only managed to win one more match, against Kenya on May 31. That victory was followed up by three successive defeats against Zimbabwe (away) and Guinea (home and away) which saw Namibia dropping to the bottom of their World Cup 2010 qualifying group.

Namibia has two matches remaining in the qualifying campaign, away to Kenya on September 6 and at home to Zimbabwe on October 11 but their chances of progressing to the finals are now virtually non-existent.
Schans had a poor record as Brave Warriors coach, with only one victory, two draws and nine defeats in 12 matches.

When contacted by Namibia Sport, Muinjo said that he could not comment on the matter at this stage.
â??I can only comment on the matter after our meeting over the weekend. Then we will make an official announcement regarding the technical team of the Brave Warriors,â? he said.
