SKW win Doc Tournament

SKWâ??s menâ??s volleyball team defended their title at the Doc Tournament in Walvis Bay last weekend. SKW dominated against NDF A in the final, beating them 3:0 in fine style to lift the menâ??s trophy for the second year in a row. Khomas Nampol beat DTS to win the ladies competition.

Last year at the Doc Tournament, SKW had their big break though, winning the tournament against all expectations. Since then SKW has established itself as the team to beat, coming a close second in the National Premier League and winning the National Club Championships in 2007.

As a result, SKW also pocketed various awards last year, winning the Team of the year awards of the Namibian Volleyball Federation and Sport Klub Windhoek SKW). Heiko Diehl, the SKW libero, also received the Player of the Year award of the NVF and the Sportsperson of the Year award of SKW.

This year SKW is aiming for a clean sweep on the local volleyball scene, and aims to add the league and the club championships to its trophy cabinet. As current National Club Champions, they will also participate in the Zone 6 Club Championships at the end of the year.

In the group matches at the Doc Tournament, SKW lost to NDF A, but won all their other games to finish second in the group. In the semifinals and finals SKW showed their big match temperament to beat Khomas Nampol 2:0 and NDF A 3:0 (25:17, 25:16, 25:14) with a combination of great skill, team work and spirit.

Khomas Nampol went on to beat Six Stars Volleyball Club for the third position.
