Namibia face Kenya in World Cup opener

Namibiaâ??s Brave Warriors will face Kenya in Windhoek on May 30 in the opening match of their World Cup 2010 preliminary round Group 2 competition.

Footballâ??s world governing body FIFA recently released the fixtures for the World Cup preliminary matches, according to which Namibia will play six preliminary qualifying matches this year.

Namibia has been drawn in Group 2 along with Kenya, Guinea and Zimbabwe. The teams will play each other on a home and away basis, after which the country that tops the log will go through to the next round of World Cup qualifiers.

In African there are 12 groups of four teams each, with the winners and the eight best runners up progressing to the next round of qualifiers. Five groups of four teams each will contest the second round with the group winners qualifying automatically for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

The top three teams in each of the five groups will qualify for the 2010 African Cup of Nations along with the hosts Angola.

Namibiaâ??s match against Kenya will herald in a busy month of four matches over four consecutive weekends.
On June 6 Namibia will travel to Harare to take on Zimbabwe and on June 13 Namibia will be back in Windhoek to take on Guinea.
Both teams will then leave for Guinea for the return leg on June 20.

After this there will be a break of more than two months before Namibia travels to Nairobi to take on Kenya on September 5.
Namibiaâ??s last preliminary qualifying match is at home to Zimbabwe on October 10.

Namibia is the lowest ranked country of the four teams in Group 2 with a FIFA world ranking of 114. Guinea is the top ranked nation at 33, followed by Zimbabwe at 87 and Kenya at 110.
