This coming Friday the Pupkewitz Jetty Mile will be taking place in Swakopmund. This first time event has captured the spirit of the open water sea swimmer and to date there are over 50 entrants eager to plunge into the sea and swim the one mile from the Aquarium past the Jetty to The Mole.
At The Mole they will replace goggles for takkies and run the one mile back to the Tiger Reef Beach Bar. The dual discipline event will make for an interesting race with top Namibian swimmers like Corinne Wahl and Jonay, Byron and Christine Briedenhann competing with the top tri-athletes like Nico Sterk, the South African tri-athlete who won the Swakop Half Iron tri-athlon at the beginning of the month and Paddy Murphy who recently competed in the Hawaiian World Championship Iron Man as well as the equivalent off road Xterra.
Yvonne Brinkmann from Otb Sport, the event organisers says, â??We think this unique Namibian event and the setting of desert, beach and sea will capture peoples sense of adventure and we expect the event to grow in the years to come. Events are made by the top athletes and the middle and back of the packers who add a social dimension. To encourage the less fit of us or the parent and child, there will also be the milder rookie event which will consist of a 600m swim in The Mole and the same 1 mile run to Tiger Reef Beach Bar â?.
