African Cup of Nations (AFCON) fever hit Namibia last month when Ghanaian football legend Abedi Pele arrived with the AFCON trophy in Windhoek on November 15.
The three-time African Player of the Year was accompanied by Professor Kwesi Yankah and Reks Brobby of the AFCON Local Organising Committee (LOC). Addressing a media conference following his arrival at the Standard Bank headquarters in the capital, Pele said the underrated countries like Namibia and Benin could cause major upsets at the continental showpiece, which kicks off on January 20 next year.
â??I personally believe in surprises. Angola and Togo did it last year when they qualified for the World Cup and we never expected them to qualify. Today we find Namibia and Benin, which many people think will be the whipping boys. But I donâ??t believe that, I think they will provide a challenge to all the teams that play against them," he said.
