The race for the top club at the National Swimming Championships heated up on Friday as Dolphins closed the gap on the Namib Swimming Academy.
At the end of the second session, NSA was still the overall leader with 20 gold medals and a total of 41 medals, but Dolphins were just behind with 17 gold medals and a total of 55 medals.
There were once again no records, but some good times were recorded, while swimmers from the visiting Mpumalanga team also put in some good performances.
Lushano Lamprecht of NSA came the closest to breaking a record when he won the Men’s 13-14 100m backstroke in 1:07,68, which was just outside Quinton Delie’s national record of 1:06,16.
Dewald Nell of NSA won the Men’s 11-12 100m backstroke in 1:17,94, which was just under two seconds off Abraham Louw’s national record of 1:16,04.
Kiah Borg of NSA won the Girls 13-14 200m breaststroke in 2:54:13, which was three seconds off Daniela Lindemeier’s national record of 2:51:06.
Zanre Oberholzer won the Girls 13-14 100m backstroke in 1:12,14, which was close to her own national record of 1:10,83.
Milan van Veenhuyzen of Mpumalanga won the Men 13-14 400m freestyle in 4:40,57, finishing well ahead of Lushano Lamprecht of NSA who came second in 4:49:59.
There were also some exciting 200m freestyle relays. In the men’s event, Dolphins won in a fast time of 1:45,72, to beat the Mpumalanga team into second place (1:48,21).
In the women’s event, the NSA team (1:57,24) just pipped the Dolphins team (1:58,26) to the line.
