Swimming champs off to good start

The Namibia National Swimming Championships started in Windhoek on Thursday, with swimmers from Windhoek, Swakopmund and Oranjemund competing.

No records were established on the opening day, but there were some good performances in the various age groups.

Kiara Schatz of Namib Swimming Academy won the Girls 11-12 50m butterfly in a time of 32,64 seconds which was close to Sonja Adelaar’s national record of 31,42 that she established at the African Junior Championships in Nigeria last December.

In the Girls 15-16 50m butterfly, Christine Briedenhann of NSA came close to her own record of 29,38 with a winning time of 30,00 seconds.

In the Girls 13-14 50m butterfly Kiah Borg of NSA put in a good performance to win in a time of 30,83 which was just over a second off Christine Briedenhann’s national record of 29,57.

At the end of the first day, Dolphins Swimming Club were comfortably leading the team competition with 312 points, followed by NSA (178), Oranjemund Sand Sharks (30) and Swakopmund Swimming Club (17).

The National Championships continue on Friday at 15h00. There will be two sessions on Saturday at 08h30 and 15h00, while the final session starts at 09h00 on Sunday.
