Windhoek Old Boys Social Club (WOB) produced a major upset by beating Unam 4-3 in a women?s Indoor Hockey Premier League match on March 16.
The youthful WOB side put in their best performance of the season with a fine team effort, but the opposite was true for Unam who couldn?t combine well as a team, while spirited defence by WOB in the second half kept them out.
Frieda Kalondo immediately gave Unam the lead from a short corner, but Elaine Kruger soon equalised for WOB from another short corner.
A fine attack by Unam?s Marilyn Nanus in the eighth minute resulted in another short corner from which Kalondo once again scored to put Unam back in the lead. But WOB immediately equalised through a great solo goal by Maike Prickett.
WOB took the lead for the first time through a short corner goal by Kruger in the 14th minute and two minutes later Kruger stretched their lead with an identical goal.
Unam dominated possession after the break, but WOB kept them out with some determined defending.
Unam missed several short corners, before Theodora Kariko finally found the net in the 36th minute after a fine build-up by Kalondo. Unam pushed hard for the equaliser, but WOB held on for a well-deserved victory.
The defeat has dented Unam?s chances of winning the league, as they are now 11 points behind log leaders DTS with one game in hand. WOB are fifth on the log with four points from five matches.
