Ashley Wheal and Dannielle van Zijl, both of Marlins Swimming Club, won the senior Victor Ludorum and Victrix Ludorum trophies respectively at the Namibian National Swimming Championships over the weekend.
Wheal won the award with a total of 5333 points, followed by Stefan van Zijl of the Namibia Swimming Academy (4 871 points) and Byron Briedenhann of the Namibia Swimming Academy (3855 points).
Dannielle van Zijl?s winning total was 6316 points, followed by Marike Meyer of the Namibia Swimming Academy (5691 points) and Jonay Briedenhann of the Namibia Swimming Academy (4993 points).
Abraham Louw of Dolphins won the junior Victor Ludorum trophy with a total of 98 points, while Nadja Sternagel of Dolphins won the junior Victrix Ludorum trophy with a total of 86 points.
The best performance of the championships was set by Dannielle van Zijl in the 100m freestyle for Open Women. Her time of 1:02:74 gave her 703 points, but it was still quite a way off Monica Dahl?s national record of 58:47.
Four Namibian and two all-comers records were set at the championships. Abraham Louw of Dolphins set two new records in the Boys 11/12 age group category. His 100m backstroke time of 1:16:04 bettered the previous record of 1:17:82, while his 200m backstroke time of 2:47:96 bettered the previous record of 2:50:65.
In the girls 15/16 year age group category Jonay Briedenhann set a new 200m backstroke record of 2:35:60, which bettered the old mark of 2:36:49.
A non-Namibian citizen, Rory Schanknecht of Dolphins set two new all-comers records in the boys 11/12 year age group category.
He set a new 200m freestyle record of 2:21:04 and a new 400m freestyle record of 4:57:95.
Dolphins won the Club competition with a total of 2249 points, followed by Marlins (1359), the Namibian Swimming Academy (909), Swakopomund (686), Spartans (271) and Oranjemund (16).
It was the second year in a row that Dolphins had won the club competition, while Marlins had previously dominated the club competition.
Dolphins were comfortable winners in both the male and female categories. Dolphins won the female category with 1112 points, followed by Marlins (694) and the Namibian Swimming Academy (471).
