A record 34 teams comprising a total of more than 300 players participated in the Pepsi Unam Indoor Hockey Tournament at the DTS Sport Club in Olympia on March 5.
It was the eighth successive year that the tournament had taken place, with teams competing in three men and three women?s leagues.
DTS won the men?s Premier League after beating their closest rivals Unam 1-0 through a goal by Aiden Bates. DTS won all their other matches to top the league with 12 points, followed by Unam on 9 and Windhoek Old Boys Social Club (WOBSC) in third place.
Steven Abel of DTS won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Ramblers successfully defended their title in the women?s Premier League, while their midfielder Tanya Frankle was voted as the MVP. Wanderers came second and Unam third.
The X team from Walvis Bay won the men?s First Division ahead of WOBSC and Unam. Fabio Silheu of the X team won the MVP award. Academia High School won the women?s First Division, followed by Unam and WOBSC, while Jerrica Cormack won the MVP award.
Sparta of Walvis Bay won the women?s Second Division after beating DTS on a better goal aggregate. Both sides finished with nine points, while Wanderers came third on seven points. Carla Venter of Sparta won the MVP award.
DTS won the men?s Second Division, followed by Civics and Rehoboth. Unam?s young goalkeeper, Stanley Witbooi won the MVP award.
The tournament has become the biggest indoor hockey tournament in Namibia, and besides the Windhoek-based clubs, teams from Walvis Bay and Rehoboth also competed this year.
