Windhoek Gymnasium A and Pro-Ed Akademie won the Under 13 and Under 11 categories at the Coastal Spur Cricket Festival that was held in Walvis Bay from August 23 to 27.
It was the 12th consecutive year that the junior cricket festival had been held and it once again saw a good turnout with young cricketers from Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Windhoek and Otjiwarongo participating.
In the Under 11 category the Swakopmund Private School, Pro-Ed Akademie won all its matches to win the competition ahead of the Junior Coastal Cricket Academy (JCCA) of Walvis Bay and Windhoek Afrikaans Privaat Skool.
Windhoek Gymnasium A also remained unbeaten to win the Under 13 category, with the Junior Coastal Cricket Academy coming second and Walvis Bay Primary School coming third.
Lohan Lourens of Pro-Ed Akademie was the best batsman in the Under 11 category, scoring 168 runs, while Wynand Breytenbach of Dolphins scored 150 runs and Jurgens Linde of Pro-Ed Akademie 110 runs.
Shane Fouche of Windhoek Gymnasium was the top bowler, taking 14 wickets, followed by Dian Neethling of Walvis Bay Primary with 12 and Adriaan Berg of Pro-Ed Akademie with 11 wickets.
A young girl, Chane de Wet of Windhoek Gymnasium won the prize for the best fielder in the Under 11 category, while Lohan Lowrens of Pro-Ed Akademie won the prize for the best wicketkeeper.
In the Under 13 competition, Brandon Groenewald of the JCCA was the best batsman with a total of 290 runs, followed by Nico Davin of Windhoek Gymnasium on 217 and Michael van Lingen of Dolphins on 171 runs.
These three players also dominated the bowling averages with Van Lingen winning the bowling competition with 18 wickets, while Davin also took 18 wickets and Groenewald 15 wickets.
Ruben Lampbrecht of Windhoek Gymnasium won the award for the best fielder while Kobus Kruger won the award for the best wicket keeper in the Under 13 category.
St Paul’s College won the award for the best team spirit in the Under 11 competition, while Windhoek Gymnasium B won the award for the best team spirit in the Under 13 category.
