Windhoek High School won the Metropolitan Boards Trophy for the fourth year in a row with an exciting 35-13 victory over Dr Lemmer of Rehoboth on Saturday evening. The match was still evenly poised at halftime with WHS leading 8-6, but WHS turned up the tempo in the second half, attacking from all corners of the field to run in five tries for a convincing victory.
Centre Johan Deysel missed with two early penalty attempts but scored from a third to put WHS 3-0 ahead. Dr Lemmer flyhalf Lou Rieckerts replied with a great penalty from the halfway line and when he added a second on 17m Dr Lemmer went ahead for the first time.
WHS however attacked relentlessly, with eighthman Gerhard Lotter putting in some strong runs, while scrumhalf Attie Joubert was stopped just before the line. Dr Lemmer’s defence finally cracked when Lotter barged over from a loose ruck after a fine counterattack by fullback Jaco Martin Venter.
Lotter scored his second try five minutes into the second half after a great break by Deysel, but Dr Lemmer fought back with a fine try by prop Jason Swartz which was converted by Rieckerts to tie the score at 13-13.
From then on, however, it was one way traffic as WHS started attacking from all corners.
Deysel regained the lead with a penalty before left wing Louwrens Mynhardt dived over in the corner from a third phase attack.
WHS right wing Denver Murorua scored a great try, as he cut through the backline and outpaced the defence to dive over next to the posts, and with Deysel adding the conversion they went 28-13 ahead.
In the final stages, Dr Lemmer tried to run from their own tryline but were caught in possession and WHS flanker Hennie van der Westhuizen burst over for their final try, converted by scrumhalf Attie Joubert.
