Semi final spots decided in rugby league

Melrick Africa

The semi final spots for the 2010 MTC Rugby Premier League have been decided with three matches remaining.

Reho Falcon are leading the log with 50 points after they beat Western Suburbs 43-26 in their last match before the semi finals on 4 September.

Falcons have had a reasonably successful season after they won nine of their 14 matches. Suburbs on the other hand, are fifth on the log having played 13 matches and won six, and might still have one more match if the arbitrators decide that their match against Mariental should be replayed instead of recording it as a forfeited match.

Suburbs refused to travel to Stampriet to play a league match against Mariental after it had emerged that the venue in Mariental had been booked for another event.

Former powerhouses, Wanderers, are currently second on the log with their last match still to be played. They have 48 points and are the only team to have won 10 of their 13 matches so far. Their next match is going to be against Mariental and if they win the match they will go to the semi finals as the log leaders.

Wanderers have been in top form lately and have not lost a match since June 26 when they lost 20-12 to United in Olympia.

Defending champions, Rehoboth, are now third on the log with 37 points after winning seven of their matches with one still to be played. They will play Unam on Friday August 20 in Windhoek and a win will be the difference between either a third or fourth place finish.

Mariental have made it to the semi finals in their debut season in the top league. They are currently fourth with 36 points. They led the league for most of the first half of the season only to come apart toward the end of the season. They have not won a match they played since 17 July when they beat Rehoboth 42-40 in Mariental. On August 7 they got points after United failed to turn up for their match citing a shortage of players.

Kudus are sixth on the log with 31 points and do not pose a threat to any of the semi final spots. They will play their last match of the season against seventh placed United in Olympia on Saturday.

Kudus and United have both won five matches this season but United has one point less.

At the bottom of the log is Unam who failed to make any impression on the league this season having won only three of their 13 matches so far. They have 18 points including six bonus points.

The match between Unam and Rehoboth will be played at 20h00 on Friday evening at the Unam Fields. The match between United and Kudus will be played at Gemsbok Park in Olympia and the match between Wanderers and Mariental will be played at the Wanderers Fields. Both matches will be played at 15h00 on Saturday.
