North West win by 8 wickets

Christi Viljoen

North West comfortably beat Namibia by eight wickets in their one-day CSA Challenge match in Potchefstroom on Sunday. Namibia won the toss and elected to bat and scored a competitive 215 for 6 wickets off their 40 overs.

North West however made short shrift of this as Christiaan Jonker scored a century and former Proteas all rounder Andrew Hall 58 to steer them to victory with 10 overs to spare.

Namibia got off to a solid start as all their top order batsmen got amongst the runs.

Raymond van Schoor scored 19, Gerhard Rudolph 39, Wian van Vuuren 26, Stephen Baard 28 and Craig Williams 27 as Namibia reached 137/5 by the 37th over.

Gerrie Snyman and Louis Burger shared a 70-run sixth wicket partnership to take Namibia past the 200-run mark. Burger was eventually out for 20, while Snyman scored 55 not out off 47 balls (6x4, 2x6) as Namibia scored 215/6 off their allotted 40 overs.

North West’s innings got off to a flying start as Christiaan Jonker smashed Namibia’s bowling attack to all corners of the field.

Such was his dominance that when Christi Viljoen dismissed fellow opener Andrea
Agathagelou for 3, the total was already on 58 off only seven overs.

The only other success Namibia would have was when new cap Kobus Barnard dismissed Kyllin Vardhan for 29.

Jonker was joined by former Protea all rounder Andrew Hall and the two went on to share an unbroken stand of 111 runs to take North West to victory off only 30 overs.

Jonker was not out on 115 off only 86 balls (15x4, 3x6), while Hall was not out on 58 off 47 balls (6x4, 2x6).

Namibia’s only wicket takers were Christi Viljoen (1/52 off 8 overs) and Kobus Barnard (1/49 off 6 overs).
