Metropolitan Namibia recently announced a sponsorship of N$23 000 to the Kiddies Sport programme which will enable 28 learners from A I Steenkamp Primary School to receive free coaching once a week during 2010.
It is the sixth consecutive year that Metropolitan has sponsored the program, which is run by Amanda van Wyk, which teaches children basic coordination and sport skills, while also helping them develop self discipline and responsibility.
“Metropolitan Namibia, in association with Kiddies Sport decided to extend this programme to underprivileged areas of Namibia five years ago. We approached the Ministry of Basic Education to help us identify two schools in Katutura. As a result, the Olaf Palme and Frans Indongo schools’ learners benefited from our sponsorship in 2005 and 2006, while Moses Garoeb and Tobias Hainyeko benefited from the programme in 2007 and 2008” said Talitha Jario of Metropolitan.
She added that Metropolitan’s total sponsorship over the five years amounted to N$225 000 while 280 children benefited from the programme.
“We are very proud to be associated with this programme due to the fact that it not only teaches the children basic coordination and sport skills, but also helps them to develop a sense of discipline, self worth and independence,” she added.
Jario thanked Van Dyk for her hard work and called on the children to make use of the opportunity presented to them.
“This is a great opportunity you are getting to help develop your talents and skills. Please do not give up, listen to your coaches and work hard – we believe you can become Namibia’s future heroes if you stay committed,” she said.
