Luketz Swartbooi gave a great performance to win the Chevron 10km Road Race in Windhoek on Saturday morning in an excellent time of 31 minutes 18 seconds.
Swartbooi, who recently turned 44, showed his younger opponents a clean pair of heels as he beat Johannes Naitembu into second place in a sprint to the line. Naitembu finished in the same time as Swartbooi, while Mynardt Kauanivi came third in 31:48.
Swartbooi’s winning time was nearly a minute slower that his course record of 30:59 which he established when he won the 2007 race. Swartbooi also holds the overall record of 29:50 for the Chevron 10km Road Race, which he set on a different route in 2000.
In the senior women’s category Helalia Johannes was also in great form to win in a new course record time of 34:55. This was 38 seconds faster than her previous record which she set in 2008, while it was her third victory over the past four years.
Helena Iipinge finished second in 36:13, while Rachel Akukothela finished third in 39:55.
Paulus Iita won the Junior Boys’ category in 40:43, followed by Kericora Murangi in 49:45, while Melissa Papgis won the junior girls’ category in 48:44, followed by Jo Andri Pretorius in 49:45.
A total of 82 athletes completed the 10km event.
Wendelinus Amesho won the 10km walk in 56:39, followed by Lukas Litongo (58:24) and Glenn Gordon (1:01:20). A total of 33 walkers completed the race.
