Namibian flyweight boxer Abmerk Shidjuu will take on Chris Edwards of England for the vacant Commonwealth flyweight title in Manchester on February 19. Namibian boxing promoter Nestor Tobias announced the fight at a press conference in Windhoek on Wednesday, saying that Shidjuu was ready for the challenge.
“We will depart for thre UK on Sunday. Abmerk is in top shape and ready to fight,” he said.
Shidjuu was confident that he would win the fight and bring the title to Namibia.
“I am fit and well prepared. I’ll make sure that I come back with the title because it belongs in Namibia,” he said.
Shidjuu won the Namibian flyweight title when he beat Simon Negodhi on a unanimous points decision over 10 rounds in September 2008, but he subsequently lost his title to Joseph Hilongwa on points over 10 rounds three months later.
Shidjuu however returned to winning ways when he beat Maurice Mutavhatsindi of South Africa with a second round knockout in July 2009, while he beat Pardon Katerera of Zimbabwe on a second round knockout in his last fight in November 2009.
Shidjuu’s professional record stands at 11 fights, 9 wins, 2 defeats and 2 draws.
In Chris Edward he will come up against an experienced 33-year-old fighter with a professional record of 30 fights, 13 wins, 14 defeats and 3 draws.
He won the English flyweight title in November 2006, and followed it up by winning the inaugural British super flyweight title in December 2007.
In January 2009 he won the Commonwealth flyweight title when he beat Wayne Bloy on a fourth round TKO, but he lost that title in his first defence, against Shinny Bayaar in May 2009.
