The NFA is the biggest Sport Association in the country, with a membership of around 11,700 people from all regions of Namibia and is affiliated with FIFA and the African Regional Football Association. Football is the most popular sport in the country, and the NFA takes leadership in promoting the sport at all ages, genders and levels to ensure that as many people as possible are able to take part. The NFA has 7 instructors at the central level, and an estimated number of 350 coaches in the country. The NFA provides FIFA approved coaching certificates to improve the level of the game at all levels.
The NFA has created a Women’s Desk, headed by former players and coaches Jacqui Shipanga and Jackey Gertse, to focus on a range of opportunities which enhance the values, attitudes and aspirations of women and girls in football. There are currently 25 active football leagues including 6 Women’s Leagues, totaling 3,700 female players in Namibia.
We actively promote the idea of football as a tool for social change, and provide technical and tactical coaching courses and support to all community-based, school and youth football coaches through the YDF (Youth Development through Football) and now through “Galz & Goals” in partnership with UNICEF and SCORE Namibia.

Sport has proven to be a highly effective means of reaching young people about social and health issues. Organized sport- whether it’s played in schools, or out on the streets- has the power of teaching important life skills such as self-esteem, respect, teamwork, and fair play, just by virtue of getting children together in a protective environment, under the guidance of a positive role model (be it a teacher, coach, parent, or fellow peer). UNICEF Namibia has recognized the power of sport to reach young people, and provide messaging not only on HIV prevention, but on Healthy Lifestyles, more broadly. It is for this reason that Sport and Development has become a priority area for the Namibia office.

SCORE Namibia’s motto is “Changing lives through sport”. SCORE is a South African non-profit, non-government, community development organisation that uses sport and physical activity as a medium of development.
SCORE recruits and trains international volunteers, who are placed in mainly rural communities in South Africa, Namibia and Zambia where they live with host families for six months to a year implementing SCORE's programmes in the community. Within Galz & Goals, SCORE provides Healthy Lifestyles Workshops for community leaders, and facilitates Kicking AIDS out activities to young girls attending our festivals.
