Galz and Goals – Young Girls Changing Lives
What is Galz & Goals?
- Galz & Goals is the first project of its kind, seeking to establish structured football leagues for under-13 and under-15 girls across the nation, for girls to have fun and stay Healthy.
- In addition to football, girls and community leaders will be given life skills training that will help them improve self-confidence and acquire the right knowledge to make positive choices
How is it being rolled out?
- Through the National Football Association’s (NFA) regional offices, girls are encouraged to sign up for Galz & Goals through schools and academies; once there is adequate registration, leagues are created
- Matches are played on weekends, and the leagues run from March to June
- At the end of each season, football festivals will be held in each region to train community leaders, and to bring teams together in a day-long tournament
Achievements so far
- 1,700 girls took part in 7 regional festivals in 2009-2010
- 178 community leaders trained on healthy lifestyles and the NFA basic coaching certificate.
- Leagues established in 6 regions
- Under-14 girls team sent to represent Namibia in 2009 Norway Cup
- 4 girls selected for Under-17 Girls National Team that competed in Swaziland 2009
- Galz & Goals team won Hessequa Youth Cup in South Africa 2010
Long term . . .
- Over 2,000 girls playing regularly across all 13 regions
- Coaches and girls being trained in technical and tactical aspects of football, as well as in healthy lifestyles
- Coaches having the opportunity to attend NFA licensing courses
- Girls becoming role models and giving back to sport through coaching, mentoring and refereeing
