Namibia survives scare against Kenya

Namibia survived a huge scare against hosts Kenya to join USA, Chile and Romania as the winners on the opening day of the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy 2009 in Nairobi on Tuesday.

The African Under 19 champions seemed to heading for a surprise defeat against a Kenyan side roared on by their vocal supporters at the RFUEA Grounds until wing Nathan Ockhuizen found a way through to score under the posts in the dying minutes to seal a 22-17 victory.

Tough Commonwealth Games standards announced

The Namibia National Olympic Committee on Tuesday announced strict new qualifying criteria for Namibian athletes who want to qualify for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India. At a press conference in Windhoek, NNOC president Agnes Tjongarero said they had decided to raise the standards to improve Namibia’s competitiveness at the highest level.

Unam make it nine in a row

Unam men once again successfully defended their status as the best men's hockey team in Namibia when they won their ninth consecutive Indoor league title over the weekend. Unam beat the X Team 3-2 in Walvis Bay and although they still have a return match to play against the X Team in Windhoek on Saturday, they cannot be overtaken any more.
Joseph Kashamako, Heini Swartbooi and Siabonga Martins scored for Unam on Saturday while Tyrone Kotze and Gianfranco Otto scored for the X Team.
