In the opening match of the 2011 IRB Nations Cup hosts Romania edged fellow Rugby World Cup qualifiers Namibia 13-11 in Bucharest.
Reigning Nations Cup holders Namibia featured 11 of their 2010 vintage, but narrowly failed in their quest to subdue a fairly pedestrian Romanian side in the opening match of the IRB Nations Cup in Bucharest.
“We failed to take our chances and although we did not play badly, we failed to put points on the board, which in the end cost us dearly, as we had to play catch-up rugby,” said Namibian coach, Johan Diergaardt.
The Namibian cricket selectors have named a young team for the upcoming ICC Intercontinental Cup match against Ireland and the Africa Premier League 20/20 World Cup qualifier in Uganda.
Three national Under 19 players, Steven Baard, Kobus Brandt and Gerhard Erasmus have been called up for the ICC Cup encounter while Baard and another Under 19 player Zhivago Groenewald have been included for the Uganda tournament.
Namibia’s U20 team won their second match when they beat the Arminia Bielefeld Youth side 3-1 in their tour of the German Westphalia region.
According to the team’s manager, Roger Kambatuku, the progress of the team is due to their commitment and discipline.
“The focus now shifts to the International Youth Tournament in which we will be competing over the weekend.” Kambatuku said.
“The tournament will be played in Theesen, which is a small town close to Bielefeld and will start on Saturday and conclude on Monday next week,” he added.
