Moses in for a battle

Paulus Moses faces the toughest test of his career when he defends his WBA lightweight title against Miguel Acosta in Windhoek on Saturday night.

The Namibian and Acosta, from Venezuela, meet at the Country Club Resort in the Namibian capital.

Acosta has not been beaten in 17 fights during the past six years.

Moses, who has a record of 25-0, with 17 knockouts, is from Okapya, Namibia. He made his professional debut in November 2002 with a second-round stoppage of Aaron Vilane and has fought mostly out of his home country.

Boxers fit and ready to rumble

Excitement is mounting ahead of Paulus “The Hitman” Moses’ title defence against Miguel Acosta of Venezuela on Saturday evening. The two boxers went for their medical check up and official weigh in at the Windhoek Country Club on Friday afternoon, where both were declared fit and ready for the fight.

The challenger, Acosta, who looked confident and indicated with a finger gesture that he would ‘slit Moses’ throat,’ weighed in at 61,1kg, which was within the lightweight limit of 61,24kg.

Schools Rugby League starts

The annual Metropolitan Board’s Trophy League is increasingly becoming more popular as 106 teams from 50 participating schools are expected to take part as schools prepare for the start of the season this Saturday, 29 May 2010. Last year, 105 teams from 45 schools took part, accommodating approximately 2650 players in the tournament.

This year 3 000 young Namibian rugby players will compete in the N$110 000 Metropolitan Boards Trophy League, an event that will showcase top youth players and teams from across nine regions.

Rugby Premiership continues

The MTC Rugby League continues this weekend with log leaders Wanderers hosting Western Suburbs in Pioneers Park on Saturday afternoon.

Wanderers lead the log after winning all three of their games since the start of the league in April. Their last match against Unam had to be stopped with eight minutes remaining due to crowd trouble. Wanderers were leading 22-10 when the referee stopped the match.

FNB Auas View Equestrian Tournament

During the weekend of 22 and 23 May 2010 the Auas View Equestrian Club held their yearly tournament, courtesy of main sponsor FNB Namibia with 72 participants. This was the first time that the bank sponsored this tournament although they have been part and parcel of the national equestrian tournaments held over the past few years.

According to Ingrid Goeieman, Manager: Events and Sponsorships at FNB Namibia, the FNB Group is known for its support of local sporting events and this tournament is one of them. FNB supports sport at both club and schools levels.
