Namibia hold slender lead over Angola

Juliana Skrywer

Namibia came from behind to beat Angola 2-1 in a hard fought and physical first leg African Women's Championships qualifier at the Sam Nujoma Stadium on Sunday. Angola’s centre forward and captain Irene Goncalves put the visitors ahead on 37 minutes, but second half goals by Thomalina Adams and Lena Fredericks gave Namibia a 2-1 victory.

Namibia now take a slender lead into the second leg encounter in Luanda on March 19, with the aggregate winner set to qualify for the finals in South Africa later this year.

Namibia’s cricketers suffered an 83-run defeat to Kwazulu Natal Inland in their one-day limited overs match at the Wanderers field on Sunday.

The previous day Namibia staged a great comeback to draw their three-day SAA Challenge match against the same opponents, but on Sunday they were outplayed from the start.

KZN Inland batted first and posted a competitive total of 208 runs from their 40 overs. Namibia’s run chase got off to a poor start as they lost wickets at regular intervals, and they were eventually all out for 125 off only 32 overs.

Leopards down Welwitschias in try feast

Two tries apiece by Michael Bondesio, Jovan Bowles, Gavin Williamson and Deon Scholtz saw the Leopards to a comprehensive 52-11 (half-time 26-11) victory over the Namibia Welwitschias in their Vodacom Cup match at Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Friday.

The fact of the matter is that the Leopards could have sent the Welwitschias back to Namibia with an even bigger hiding were it not for periodic handling errors due to a slippery ball caused by rain just before kick-off.
