Pumas overcome gallant Welwitschias

Chrysander Botha

The Pumas overcame a gallant performance from Namibia’s Welwitchias to triumph 30-10 (halftime 17-7) in their Vodacom Cup North section match at the Nelspruit Rugby Club in Nelspruit on Saturday.

The match never reached any great heights as both sides were guilty of numerous handling errors although they were hampered by conditions that saw the first half played in stifling humidity while heavy rain in the second stanza made control of the ball difficult.

In the end the home side ran in five tries to preserve their unbeaten home record this season.

Seychelles knocked Namibia out of the African Champions Cup after drawing 1-all in their second leg encounter at Sam Nujoma Stadium on Saturday. Seychelles took the lead on 26m through Don Anacoura but Namibia immediately struck back through a goal by Heini Isaacks.

Namibia bombarded Seychelles’ goals in the second half, while Tangeni Shipahu also had a goal disallowed for offside, but Seychelles managed to hold out for the draw to go through 2-1 to the second round, after winning the first leg 1-0 in Seychelles a fortnight ago.
