Welwitschias run riot against the Falcons

Namibia’s Welwitschias beat the Falcons 66-35 in a thrilling Vodacom Cup match in Windhoek on Friday night.

The Welwitschias got off to a flyer, scoring three tries within five minutes to race into a 19-0 lead, but the visitors made a determined comeback to reduce the deficit to 26-16 at halftime.

They scored a converted try early in the second half to come within three points of the Welwitschias, but that’s the closest they got as the home side stepped up the tempo to run in 10 tries in a scintillating display of attacking rugby.

Tough assignment for Brave Gladiators

Namibia’s national women’s soccer team, the Brave Gladiators face a tough assignment against Angola in an African Women’s Championship qualifying match in Luanda on Sunday afternoon.

Namibia hold a narrow 2-1 advantage from the first leg in Windhoek a fortnight ago and will have to be at their best to progress to the next round.

Good news for the Namibian camp is that top striker Emmerentia ‘Kleintjie’ Fredericks is back in the squad after a long absence due to injury, while central defender Rejoice Kasaona also makes a return after injury.

Namibian girls win silver in South Africa

The Namibian Under 17 teams that participated at the youth Olympic qualifier held in East London from February 21-28, gave a good account of themselves with the girls’ team bringing home the silver medal. A total of six teams participated, namely the hosts South Africa, Egypt (boys only), Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
