International Sevens treat in store
Submitted by editor on Thu, 09/24/2009 - 18:51.Namibian rugby fans will be treated to a unique spectacle when the Trustco International Sevens Rugby Tournament takes place in Windhoek this weekend. The tournament, which is being sponsored by Trustco Namibia to an amount of N$3 million, has drawn some of the top Sevens teams in the world and includes the defending IRB Sevens circuit champions South Africa, the runners-up at last year’s World Cup, Argentina, and the legendary Fijians – one of the most successful Sevens team in the history of the game.
Blue Waters looking to extend lead
Submitted by editor on Thu, 09/24/2009 - 18:09.Blue Waters will look to extend their unbeaten run and their lead at the top of the MTC Premiership when they host Hotspurs at the SFC Stadium in Swakopmund on Saturday afternoon. The newly promoted Beautiful Birds have surprised friend and foe alike by going to the top of the Premiership after recording two consecutive victories. They shocked Oshakati City with a 4-0 victory in Oshakati on September 12 and a week later beat Ramblers 2-0 at home.
NFA, SportFive agreement
Submitted by editor on Thu, 09/24/2009 - 12:19.The Namibia Football Association has finally sealed an agreement with worldwide broadcasting giants SportFive in the build-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. According to NFA Secretary-General Barry Rukoro, the agreement that runs up to June 11 2010, will see SportFive facilitating Pre-World Cup friendly matches in Namibia.
“It will be a great chance for Namibia to host World Cup teams either playing against Namibia or amongst themselves, but significantly these matches will be played in Namibia,” Rukoro explained.
Namibia, SA U17 meet on Sunday
Submitted by editor on Thu, 09/24/2009 - 09:54.Namibia’s national Under 17 soccer side will host South Africa this week as they clash on Sunday at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in a friendly match. The Namibia U17 squad that has been together for about two years now will play their final match at that level as they will be transformed into the Under 20 squad.
According to Team manager Jakes Amaning, the match will be an emotional one for the lads and they have promised to go out with a bang, by sending a warning to the South Africans.
Namibia fifth at COSANA Champs
Submitted by editor on Thu, 09/24/2009 - 08:06.Namibia finished fifth out of eight nations at the COSANA (Confederation of Southern African Netball Associations) Championships after beating Zimbabwe 44-31 in the fifth place playoff match in Durban, South Africa on Thursday.
It was a great comeback by the Namibian team as they were beaten 37-32 by Zimbabwe during the group stages.
It was Namibia’s first international competition in 12 years, and although they lost most of their matches, they were not overshadowed at all and showed that they can become a force with regular competition.
