Namibia gave a courageous display before going down 1-0 to Nigeria in their 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Calabar on Sunday.
Namibia thwarted numerous Nigerian attacks throughout the match and seemed to be heading for a draw when Ikechukwu Uche scored Nigeria’s winner 10m from time.
Namibia’s defence failed to clear a loose ball in a cowded box and Uche slammed the ball into the net from close range.
It was tough luck on Namibia who had defended well throughout the match, none more so than goal keeper Virgil Vries, who brought off several fine saves.
Raymond van Schoor was named as Namibia’s Cricket Player of the Season at Cricket Namibia’s annual prizegiving ceremony on Saturday evening.
Middle order batsman Van Schoor, who is the vice captain of the national team, beat captain Sarel Burger and all rounder Christi Viljoen to the award.
After initially making his mark as an opening batsman in the team, Van Schoor was moved down to the middle order in the three-day competitions, although he was retained as an opener in the T20 format of the game.
Goalkeeper Charles Uirab won the Player of the Season award at Cymot SKW’s prize giving ceremony for the 2011/12 season on May 30.
Uirab was one of SKW’s most consistent performers and only conceded 14 goals throughout the 22-round Premier League.
That was the second least goals conceded behind champions Black Africa who conceded 12 goals.
