Two fantastic freekicks by Eslin Kamuhanga gave Civics a 2-1 victory against log leaders African Stars at Windhoek’s Independence Stadium on Wednesday night. The fine performances on the field of play were however overshadowed by events off it as the match started close to an hour late due to a faulty floodlight while crowd violence delayed play even further and the match eventually finished close to 23h00.

The ninth edition of the Namibian Newspaper Cup was launched in Windhoek today with the organisers announcing a total sponsorship of close to N$1 million. This year’s sponsorship will amount to N$935 000, with close to N$200 000 going towards the publicity and advertising campaign, alone.

The sponsorship is a significant increase of N$275 000 on the N$660 000 that was sponsored in 2007 when the event last took place. Last year the event was postponed due to heavy rains in the north where the event was scheduled to take place.

Wanderers will meet United in the final of the MTC Cricket Premier League at the Wanderers field on Saturday, March 28 after winning their semifinal matches last Saturday. Wanderers thrashed Oshakati by 117 runs in the first semifinal, after amassing 317 for 7 in their 50 overs.

Nicolaas Scholtz scored a great century and was eventually out for 147 runs which included 10 fours and 4 sixes. Gerrie Snyman added 59 (6x4, 3x6) and Andrew Louw 35 as Wanderers’ batsmen piled on the runs at more than six an over.

FNB Namibia assembled with sport journalists in the capital on Tuesday afternoon to announce breaking news about its overall football sponsorship within FNB Namibia and launched the FNB Namibia’s Confederations Cup, Customer Campaign at the Khomasdal Stadium.

“I am sure you are all aware, the FIFA Confederations Cup this year in South Africa is a build-up football tournament preceding the FIFA World Cup Competition where the global village will zoom-in and focus all attention on South Africa next year,” said FNB Namibia CEO, Ian Leyenaar.
