National cricket squad selected

Craig Williams

The Namibian cricket selectors have named a 26-man squad in preparation for the final qualifying tournament for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, which takes place in South Africa in April 2009. Namibia will compete along with 11 other Associate member countries, with the top four teams qualifying for the 2011 Cricket World Cup.

Namibia will face tough opposition in the likes of Ireland, who beat them in the 2008 ICC Intercontinental Cup final, Scotland, Kenya and the UAE, who won a World Cricket League Division 3 limited overs competition in Windhoek a year ago.

FNB Desert Dash launched

First National Bank of Namibia on Tuesday handed over a sponsorship of N$105 000 for this year’s Desert Dash endurance cycling event which takes place on December 12. The event, which covers 340km from Windhoek to Swakopmund, is unofficially the longest cycling endurance ride in the world, and takes place for the fourth consecutive year while it is the second year that FNB will sponsor the event.

It was started by Aiden de Lange in 2005 when he and 40 other like-minded riders cycled in teams from Windhoek to Swakopmund in 24 hours.
