Namibian junior athletics team selected

Athletics Namibia has selected a team of 13 athletes to represent the country at the Confederation of African Athletics Southern Region Youth Championships which take place in Harare, Zimbabwe on May 27.

All the athletes represented Namibia at he recent Cossasa Athletics Championships in Gaborone, Botswana, where Namibia won the event with a total of 58 medals.

Christien Kruger, who won the award for the top girls Under 17 athlete and Israel Tjiramba who won the award for the top male Under 17 athlete in Gaborone, are both in the team.

Arrows secure Premiership survival

Eleven Arrows retained their Premiership status after beating United Stars 2-0 at the Kuisebmund Stadium on Saturday.

Peter Ngwenya gave them the lead just before halftime when he slammed in a loose ball in a goalmouth scramble.

Enrico Hoebeb sealed their victory with a great individual goal midway through the second half when he beat three defenders on a solo run.

United Stars’ defeat saw them finishing second last on the log, to be relegated along with Hotspurs to the first division.

Jacobs stars in India

Quinton Jacobs

Former Brave Warriors captain Quinton Jacobs has just completed a very successful season in India where he helped his team Sikkim United gain promotion to the Indian Premier League, while he also signed up with one of India’s top clubs, Salgocar.

Jacobs played a starring role for Sikkim United both as a leader and a goal scorer. He was appointed captain of the team and playing in his favoured attacking midfield role, he went on to score 11 goals in 19 matches.

Arrows, United Stars in do or die match

The 2011/12 Namibia Premier League comes to a close on Saturday when the final round of matches will be held. With Black Africa already having won the league, the focus will shift to the Kuisebmund Stadium in Walvis Bay where Eleven Arrows take on United Stars in a do or die match that will determine who will be relegated.

Arrows and United Stars are level on 17 points each although Arrows have a better goal advantage by four goals.

Herunga, Mayova aim to go faster

Namibia’s speed queens Tjipekapora Herunga and Globine Mayova are confident of reaching even faster times this year as they prepare for more international events coming up this year.

Their coach Letu Hamhola said he hoped to send them to international athletics meetings in Europe, depending on finances, but they will definitely both be in action at the Africa Athletics Championships which take place in Benin from June 27 to July 1.

Herunga and Mayova have been in fantastic form at the South African Yellow Pages Series over the past two months, breaking number of records.
